Many people ask us this question: “Will I need a license to perform microblading?”
And the answer to that is: it depends on where you are located. Of course, you’re planning on getting into microblading and you must have this question answered before going all-in into it. In this post we will tell you what you’ll need to perform microblading legally in your state.
Every state in different. We’re located in California, and the laws will change from county to county, even city to city. For example: if you’re thinking of working in the county of Los Angeles, you’ll need a body art practitioners permit and in order to obtain that you’ll need the following:
Fill out a form.
Two pictures (passport size).
Hepatitis B vaccine proof or Hepatitis B declination form.
Valid government ID (driver’s license, state ID).
Completion of a LA county approved Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control training (done in 2 hours).
Fee of $47 in the form of a cashier’s check or money order.
Permanent makeup in Los Angeles county is regulated by a subdivision of the Health Department called the Body Art Department. Interestingly, they do not operate in all cities within the county, for example, they do not work in the cities of Pasadena, Long Beach, and Vernon meaning that in these cities you won’t need any license to operate besides a business license if you own your own beauty studio.
Again, every state is different and even within the state, counties are different and cities within counties will have exceptions. Therefore, it’s very important that you do your own research in your specific location starting with your health department and asking them if they operate in your city.
There’s a misconception in microblading that people believes you should have a cosmetology license to perform microblading. You don’t need a cosmetologist license to perform microblading for the simple reason that microblading falls in the category of tattooing, practice that is not regulated by any Board of Cosmetology.
